directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>npm install --save ethers<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Install Ethers.js with npm by using the following command inside the &#8220;smart-contract-discord-bot&#8221; directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>npm install --save discord.js<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Create an Alchemy API Key<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When listening to smart contract events on the blockchain, you will need a way to connect to the blockchain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than running a full node on the same machine that you have your discord bot running, you can instead use the API access provided by companies like <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alchemy.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.alchemy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alchemy<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/infura.io\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/infura.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">Infura<\/a> to connect to the blockchain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will use Alchemy for the purposes of this tutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you will need to sign up for an account at Alchemy at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/alchemy.com\/?r=jEyNTI4MTU0ODg0M\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/alchemy.com\/?r=jEyNTI4MTU0ODg0M<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because I will be monitoring a smart contract on the Polygon network, for the ecosystem, I will select the &#8220;Ethereum Including L2s&#8221; option. In my example, I will select Polygon Mainnet. Then click continue and select Let&#8217;s Go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"852\" height=\"590\" src=\"http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-551\" srcset=\"http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-8.png 852w, http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-8-300x208.png 300w, http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-8-768x532.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 852px) 100vw, 852px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you will be shown your API key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copy this API key, then create a file called &#8220;.env&#8221; inside the &#8220;smart-contract-discord-bot&#8221; directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Update the .env with the following, replacing YOUR-API-KEY with your real Alchemy API key:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>ALCHEMY_URL=https:\/\/polygon-mainnet.g.alchemy.com\/v2\/YOUR-API-KEY<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To use this .env file in your project, you will need to download the dotenv library with the following command inside your &#8220;smart-contract-discord-bot&#8221; directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>npm install --save dotenv<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>After this is complete, go into the bot.js file and make the following changes.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/programmablewealth\/41b5ee920f6addb8cfeeacaed594a491.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Run the bot.js file inside the &#8220;smart-contract-discord-bot&#8221; directory with the following command, and you should see the Alchemy URL including the API key printed in the console.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>node bot.js<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Use Ethers.js to Monitor Smart Contract Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, we will update the bot.js script to use the Ethers.js library to detect smart contract events on-chain then log a message on the console.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we get started with writing the code for this step we will need a few things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>The network ChainID where the smart contract we want to monitor is deployed<\/li><li>The address that the smart contract has been deployed to<\/li><li>The smart contract Application Binary Interface (ABI)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The network chain ID can be found by searching using the network&#8217;s name on <a href=\"https:\/\/chainlist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/chainlist.org\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I will be monitoring a smart contract deployed to Polygon, searching for &#8220;Polygon&#8221; on chainlist.org gives me the ChainID of 137.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"648\" src=\"http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-9-1024x648.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-560\" srcset=\"http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-9-1024x648.png 1024w, http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-9-300x190.png 300w, http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-9-768x486.png 768w, http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-9.png 1332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/chainlist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/chainlist.org\/<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, we will need the smart contract address. I am using the Aavegotchi Diamond smart contract, which is easily located in the Aavegotchi contracts GitHub repositories <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/aavegotchi\/aavegotchi-contracts\/blob\/master\/README.md\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/github.com\/aavegotchi\/aavegotchi-contracts\/blob\/master\/README.md\" target=\"_blank\">READM<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/aavegotchi\/aavegotchi-contracts\/blob\/master\/README.md\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/github.com\/aavegotchi\/aavegotchi-contracts\/blob\/master\/README.md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">E<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/aavegotchi\/aavegotchi-contracts\/blob\/master\/README.md\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/github.com\/aavegotchi\/aavegotchi-contracts\/blob\/master\/README.md\" target=\"_blank\"> file<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"783\" height=\"183\" src=\"http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-562\" srcset=\"http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-10.png 783w, http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-10-300x70.png 300w, http:\/\/10.0.0.14:32768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image-10-768x179.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 783px) 100vw, 783px\" \/><figcaption>Aavegotchi Diamond Contract Address on Polygon: 0x86935F11C86623deC8a25696E1C19a8659CbF95d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, we need the smart contract ABI. You can get this in a number of ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Checking in the developer documentation to see if it is published on GitHub<\/li><li>Check the contract address on the Block Explorer to see if the contract has been verified with an ABI published<\/li><li>Compile the smart contract code and generate the ABI yourself <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Aavegotchi developers have made this an easy process, the ABI for the Aavegotchi Diamond is available on GitHub at the following link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/raw.githubusercontent.com\/aavegotchi\/aavegotchi-contracts\/master\/diamondABI\/diamond.json\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/raw.githubusercontent.com\/aavegotchi\/aavegotchi-contracts\/master\/diamondABI\/diamond.json<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I have all the inputs required to use Ethers.js to monitor the smart contract events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copy the smart contract ABI into the &#8220;smart-contract-discord-bot&#8221; that contains the Discord bot&#8217;s credentials to connect to the Discord server to send messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The config.json will contain 3 attributes. A token, client ID, and guild ID. Please manage this config.json file securely as it will provide access to your Discord server.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/programmablewealth\/d58284848f7cf63f0cc122441cefb628.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n<p>You can get your token by going into the <a href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/developers\/applications\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/developers\/applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Discord developer portal<\/a> in the Bot section of your application and selecting the &#8220;Reset Token&#8221; button.
